Connecting Over 80 Years

As we continue to celebrate our 80th year of Scouting in Newry, we held an afternoon of history and connection on Saturday 18th October 2025. For over three hours, our Scout Den was transformed into a living museum with photos, memorabilia and people spanning the busy history of our Scout Group since 1945! Known as the 6th Down Unit, St Colman’s Unit, 1st Dromore or simply Newry Scout Group, there are a significant number of Newry’s population who have worn a blue and white neckerchief at one stage or another. Saturday was an excellent opportunity to celebrate on this and reminisce on the fun, friendship and adventure of the past.

As well as our own Scouters, their families and our Venture Scouts in attendance, we had some very special guests: Paddy Traynor & family (Ann, Dermot, Sean & Mrs Traynor), John Savage, Rowan Hand, Paul O’Hanlon, John & Frances McCourt, John & Liam Quinn, David Burns, Eamonn Quinn, Declan McConaghy, and David McCourt. We were delighted to have members from April 1945 right the way through to modern day joining us.

A rich and informative afternoon was enjoyed by all, and we were fueled by a light buffet, buns and plenty of tea. The Scout Group is grateful to everyone who assisted in any way, especially those who donated or provided photographs and memorabilia. Thanks go to Ronan McGrath and Rónán McGibbon who each put a significant amount of effort into bringing the idea to life.
