Four Cubs assembled at the Carnbane Industrial estate entrance to the towpath on a gloomy Saturday evening at around 4PM, ready to set off on their independent expedition. After giving the Cubs a walkie talkie and a head start, a few leaders started behind them on the same path, whilst another leader made their way to the first checkpoint in the van.
Luckily the rain began to ease as we they reached the final checkpoint, and the Cubs were able to stop and get a snack and put on their high vis jackets in preparation for walking on the road. At this point the leaders and Cubs walked together with an escort from the van to ensure everyone was safe as possible.
After walking for a short while on the road we all reached our destination in Dromantine, but it wasn’t time to relax just yet as we still had to set up camp. The Cubs did an amazing job at listening to direction, and were able to put up their own tents with very little help from the leaders. unfortunately the rain was coming down fairly heavily at this point but the Cubs powered on.
Finally it was time for the Cubs to cook their dinner, Mac and cheese, and pasta cooked on the camping stoves was just what they needed. The rain had also subsided and the Cubs were able to eat their dinner in the warmth of the setting sun.
We finished the evening with Cubs and leaders alike sitting around the campfire playing a game that really got them thinking, and having learnt how to play the Cubs decided they’d like to take the new game back to the other Cubs in their pack.
The next morning, at around 8:30Am the Cubs were up, dressed, packed and had their breakfast. The Cubs got a taste of how they will be break camp when they are in Scouts. Once we got everything packed in the van we set off once again, one foot after the other, back out on to the road.
When we reached the tow path again the Cubs began their independent walking once again until we were back where we started the evning before. Unfortunately for the Cubs and their now sore legs, they still had a few more kilometers to go. We did however, stop at Timmoney’s to get an ice cream treat for the Cubs who had worked so hard to get there. The ice cream gave the Cubs the energy boost they needed for their last bit of a walk back to the hall.
Back at the hall the Cubs were relieved to have finished their expedition, and happy to know that they were very close to completing their Chief Scout award, a round of applause is well deserved by these four Cubs who persevered, not only through the weekend, but also over the last six months.
Below are some quotes from those Cubs who have Completed their chief scout award this year:
” It gives you good experience and gives you a lot of opportunities to hang out with friends.”
” The chief scout award helped me achieve my goals”
”The chief scout award helped me with my Scouting skills”
Amazing. Well done.
What an achievement especially in such adverse weather confirms.Well done to all involved
